How to Repair a Broken Wood Sunglass Frame: The Field-Fix Guide (Cali Life Co.)

TL;DR: Most wood sunglass issues fall into three categories. Loose hinges are DIY-fixable in 30 seconds with a #00 Phillips screwdriver. Surface scratches are DIY-fixable in 5 minutes with fine sandpaper and food-grade mineral oil. Structural breaks (snapped temple, glue joint failure, lens groove crack) are warranty replacements rather than DIY repairs. The Cali Life Co. lifetime frame warranty covers all structural failures regardless of original purchase date, with no receipt required for honest claims. This guide walks through what you can fix yourself and what to send to contact@calilifeco.com.

The honest reality of frame repair is that some fixes you can do at home and some you cannot. We will tell you which is which.

The three repair categories

Every wood sunglass issue we see fits one of three buckets.

| Issue | DIY-fixable | Tools needed | Time | |---|---|---|---| | Loose hinges | Yes | #00 Phillips screwdriver | 30 seconds | | Surface scratches | Yes (light) | Fine sandpaper, mineral oil | 5 to 10 minutes | | Lens popped out | Yes (sometimes) | None | 2 minutes | | Hinge fully broken | No | Send for warranty | 5 to 7 days | | Snapped temple | No | Send for warranty | 5 to 7 days | | Glue joint separation | No | Send for warranty | 5 to 7 days | | Lens groove crack | No | Send for warranty | 5 to 7 days | | Frame split through wood | No | Send for warranty | 5 to 7 days |

The three DIY-fixable issues account for roughly 60 percent of repair questions we get. The other 40 percent are warranty cases.

Field fix 1: tighten a loose hinge

The most common wear issue. Hinges loosen with daily use.

1. Identify which hinge is loose. Open and close both temples. The loose one swings freely instead of stopping at a defined angle. 2. Find a #00 Phillips screwdriver. Most multi-tools have one. Optical shops sell eyewear repair kits for $5 to $10. We send the right size with every warranty replacement. 3. Locate the screw on the inside of the hinge plate. It is the smallest screw on the frame, usually visible from the inside of the temple. 4. Turn clockwise gently. Quarter-turn at a time. Test the temple between turns. 5. Stop when the temple holds open at a natural reading angle without falling. Over-tightening cracks the wood around the screw. Snug, not crushed. 6. Clean any debris around the hinge with a microfiber cloth.

If the screw spins without engaging, the hinge thread is stripped. That is a warranty case, not a DIY fix.

Field fix 2: light surface scratches

Wood scratches usually buff out. The American Optometric Association publishes care guidelines for sunglasses that align with this approach.

1. Inspect the scratch. If it is a hairline scuff, proceed. If it is a deep gouge or splits the wood, send for warranty. 2. Get fine sandpaper. 2000-grit or higher works best for wood frames. Available at any auto parts store or hardware store. 3. Wet the sandpaper slightly. Damp, not soaked. 4. Sand the scratched area in light circles. Very light pressure. Five to ten gentle passes. 5. Wipe with a microfiber cloth. 6. Apply one drop of food-grade mineral oil to the area. Let it absorb for 5 minutes. 7. Buff with a fresh microfiber cloth.

The scratch should now be invisible or significantly less visible. Repeat once if needed. Stop if the scratch is not improving after two cycles.

Field fix 3: lens popped out

Sometimes a lens pops out of the lens groove from impact or pressure. Often re-installable.

1. Identify the lens orientation. Polarized lenses have a specific orientation. The polarization axis runs vertically when the lens is correctly placed. 2. Inspect the lens for damage. Cracks or chips mean the lens needs replacement. Cosmetic groove damage is fine. 3. Inspect the lens groove on the frame. A clean, intact groove will accept the lens. A cracked or stretched groove is a warranty case. 4. Position the lens with the polarization vertical. Most lenses have a small alignment dot or arrow. 5. Press the lens into the bottom of the groove first, then top. Use thumbs, gentle pressure. 6. Test the lens fit by holding the frame upside down. A correctly seated lens does not fall out.

If the lens does not seat snugly, the groove may have stretched. Email a photo to contact@calilifeco.com.

What you cannot DIY: the warranty cases

Some repairs require manufacturer-level work. Trying to DIY them usually makes the problem worse.

Snapped temple. A clean break across the wood is not a wood-glue fix. The replacement temple has to be machined, finished, and aligned to the existing frame. Warranty case.

Glue joint separation. Frame fronts and temples are bonded with marine-grade adhesive. Re-gluing with wood glue does not match the original strength and looks visibly different. Warranty case.

Lens groove crack. A cracked groove cannot hold a lens reliably. Sometimes it can be repaired by re-routing, sometimes the frame needs replacement. Warranty case.

Hinge thread stripped. A new hinge with intact threads is required. Replacing a hinge requires precision drilling and alignment. Warranty case.

Frame cracked through. A wood frame that has split across the front bridge or temple is past field repair. Warranty case.

For all of these, contact@calilifeco.com handles it. Send a photo, describe the issue, and we send instructions for shipping the frame for warranty assessment.

How the warranty process works

Five steps from initial email to replacement on your face.

1. Send a photo of the issue to contact@calilifeco.com. No receipt required for honest claims. 2. We confirm the warranty case within 24 hours. Most claims are approved on the first email. 3. We send shipping instructions. Sometimes we cover return shipping, sometimes the customer covers it depending on the situation. 4. The frame ships back to our San Diego workshop. A new frame is built or a repair is performed. 5. The replaced frame ships back to you. Total time from initial email to replacement on your face is typically 7 to 14 days.

The lifetime warranty covers structural failures regardless of original purchase date. Cosmetic wear (surface scratches that did not buff out, finish softening over years) is not covered, but discounted replacements are available through our owner-rewards program.

What about glue and tape as field fixes

Honest answer: skip them.

  • Wood glue on a snapped temple. Will not hold under daily wear stress. Will look visibly different. Permanently damages the frame for proper warranty repair.
  • Super glue on a hinge crack. Cyanoacrylate glues attack wood finish and may craze the lens coating. Not recommended.
  • Tape over a lens groove crack. Temporary at best, looks bad immediately, cannot hold a lens long-term.

For any structural break, a warranty claim is faster, free, and produces a real fix instead of a workaround.

FAQ

Can I fix a broken hinge on my wood sunglasses myself?

A loose hinge is DIY-fixable with a #00 Phillips screwdriver, takes 30 seconds. A fully broken hinge or stripped thread is a warranty case.

Will wood glue fix a snapped temple?

Not durably. Wood glue does not match the original adhesive strength and looks different from the surrounding finish. Send the frame for warranty replacement instead.

How do I get a scratch out of a wood sunglass frame?

Light scratches buff out with 2000-grit sandpaper in damp light circles, followed by a drop of food-grade mineral oil and a microfiber buff. Deep gouges are warranty cases.

My lens fell out, can I put it back in?

Often yes. Identify the polarization orientation, inspect the lens and groove for damage, and press the lens back into the bottom of the groove first then the top. If the groove is cracked, send a photo to contact@calilifeco.com.

Does the warranty cover everything?

The lifetime frame warranty covers structural failures (hinges, glue joints, lens grooves, frame cracks). Cosmetic wear is not covered, but owner-rewards pricing makes replacements affordable.

Do I need a receipt for warranty claims?

No. We do not require receipts for honest claims. A photo of the issue and a description of what happened is enough.

How long does warranty replacement take?

Typically 7 to 14 days from the initial email to a replacement frame back on your face. Most claims are approved on the first email.
